Distinguished and Famous people from Wheatbelt South

๐Ÿ“– Albert Facey

Albert Facey farmed in the Wickepin district after a childhood of hard work and later service in the First World War. Born in Victoria, he made Western Australia central to the story eventually published as A Fortunate Life in 1981. The autobiography describes hardship without losing its gratitude for family and companionship. A surviving homestead at Wickepin gives visitors a physical link with those farming years. Its modest rooms suit a writer whose reputation rested on the experiences of an ordinary working life, told with unusual directness.

โœ๏ธ Dorothy Hewett

Dorothy Hewett was born in Perth in 1923 but spent childhood on her family's farm near Wickepin. In a later oral-history interview she distinguished the city birthplace from the rural home with characteristic directness. Poetry, fiction and plays eventually made her an important Australian writer, with Bobbin Up among her novels. Her life later took her to other cities and the Blue Mountains. The wheatbelt upbringing remained part of her personal and imaginative history, providing a rural childhood behind a career often associated with theatre, politics and urban working life.

๐Ÿ Brad Hogg

Brad Hogg was born at Narrogin and grew up on his family's sheep farm near Williams. Left-arm spin took him into Western Australian and Australian cricket, including the victorious World Cup teams of 2003 and 2007. His later Twenty20 career kept him in the game well beyond the age at which many players retire. The rural connection continued through agricultural speaking engagements and work encouraging closer relationships between producers and city consumers. For spectators, the concentration of his bowling had a memorable visual signature: the tongue poking out as the ball was delivered.
